This page provides information on the three non-surgical vaginal radiofrequency treatments available at our London clinic: ThermiVa, Ultra Femme 360, and Votiva (FormaV). Understanding the differences can help you with discussions of your options with Dr. Nadia during your consultation. All procedures mentioned are performed by Dr. Yousri.

Understanding Your Options

  • ThermiVa – Uses monopolar radiofrequency energy, which travels from the handpiece to a grounding pad. This allows for deeper tissue heating (approx. 3-5 mm). It features real-time temperature monitoring to maintain a specific range (40–45°C) for safety and effectiveness.

ThermiVa can treat both internal vaginal tissues and the external labia minora and majora. Patients report a painless, gentle warming sensation. It is noted for its potential effect on nerve response, which can influence sexual satisfaction and address urge incontinence. Maintenance is usually suggested every 8–12 months.

  • Ultra Femme 360 – Also employs monopolar radiofrequency but generally operates at lower temperatures and with less tissue penetration compared to ThermiVa, focusing more on superficial layers. It aims to stimulate collagen and elastin formation.

Ultra Femme addresses internal vaginal and some external vulvar tissues but is not typically used on the labia minora or most of the labia majora. The sensation is painless warming, though some patients report a “snapping” feeling. It is FDA approved, and a series of treatments (minimum 3) is usually recommended, with annual maintenance often suggested.

  • Votiva (FormaV) – Utilises bipolar radiofrequency, where energy passes between two electrodes on the handpiece itself. This provides controlled heating, generally at a more superficial to moderate depth than ThermiVa. It treats both internal and external areas, including the labia majora and minora. Votiva focuses on addressing pelvic floor muscle weakness alongside functional and aesthetic improvements like tightening and lubrication.

The procedure is painless with a comfortable warming feeling. A course of treatment (often three sessions) is standard, with results typically lasting over a year.

Choosing the Right Treatment for You

All three treatments use radiofrequency energy to address common concerns such as vaginal laxity, dryness, changes in sensation, and mild urinary incontinence without surgery. They are designed to be painless procedures with no required recovery time, allowing you to return to your daily activities immediately after.

As a patient, its important to to understand the significant role these non-surgical regenerative procedures play, particularly for women seeking alternatives to hormone-based treatments.
For women who choose not to use Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), or for whom HRT is medically unsuitable (contraindicated), these RF treatments offer a highly effective solution. They provide a pathway to address troublesome symptoms without the potential risks or side effects associated with hormones.

When it comes to restoring local tissue function – addressing issues like vaginal dryness, laxity, irritation, and mild urinary incontinence – these regenerative procedures can often be particularly effective, potentially offering advantages over even local HRT applications for functional improvement. This means that women who may feel ‘left in limbo’ regarding treatment options have access to advanced, non-hormonal technology designed to significantly restore tissue health and improve quality of life. Dr. Nadia believes strongly in empowering women with information about all feasible solutions, allowing them to find their ‘new brave world’ of comfort and confidence.

The differences in energy type (monopolar vs. bipolar), penetration depth, temperature control, specific treatment areas (including labial suitability), and primary focus (nerve response vs. collagen/elastin vs. pelvic floor) mean that one treatment option may be more suitable for your specific needs than another.

  1. Radiofrequency (RF) devices from different brands vary in design and the depth to which they deliver heat into tissues.

  2. Technically, RF energy can be delivered using monopolar, bipolar, or multipolar (e.g., tripolar, tetrapolar) configurations.

  3. Regardless of the specific manufacturing design, all these devices fundamentally work by producing Radiofrequency energy.

  4. The biological effect of RF energy stimulates the formation of new and healthier tissue, thereby helping to restore normal function and anatomy.

Therefore, assessment by an experienced Gynaecologist is imperative to determine the appropriate indications and contraindications. This specialist can develop a tailored treatment plan, selecting the most suitable device and protocol for the individual patient’s condition to achieve the maximum benefit.

Dr. Nadia will conduct a thorough gynaecological assessment and discuss your concerns during a private consultation. Based on this assessment, she will recommend the treatment option best suited to achieve your desired outcome.
